South African football has been plunged into mourning following the tragic death of Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Jayden Adams at the age of 25, Trybal news reports.
The talented midfielder passed away just weeks after representing his country at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where he featured prominently as South Africa reached the knockout stages before eventually falling to co-hosts Canada in the Round of 32.
Adams played in all three of Bafana Bafana’s group-stage matches during the tournament, emerging as one of the standout performers in a memorable campaign for the South Africans on football’s biggest stage.
Tributes have poured in from across the football world following news of his passing. South Africa’s Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, described Adams as one of the nation’s brightest young talents and called for privacy and restraint while investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding his death.
Authorities in South Africa have opened an investigation after the body of a 25-year-old man was discovered at a residence in Schotschekloof, Cape Town, on Saturday morning. The cause of death has not yet been confirmed.
Born in Cape Town, Adams rose through the ranks at Stellenbosch FC before becoming the club’s first academy graduate to sign a professional contract. His impressive performances earned him a move to Mamelodi Sundowns in January 2025, where he continued his rise as one of the country’s finest midfielders.
Since making his senior debut for South Africa in 2022, Adams established himself as a regular for Bafana Bafana and was widely regarded as a key figure in the next generation of South African football.
His untimely passing leaves a huge void for his family, teammates, Mamelodi Sundowns and the wider South African football community.
