The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has confirmed Nigerian administrator Samson Adamu as its substantive General Secretary.
The appointment makes Adamu the first Nigerian to hold the position in CAF’s 70 year history. He previously served as Acting General Secretary after the departure of Véron Mosengo Omba.
Adamu took up the acting role on Sunday, 29 March 2026, following the resignation of the Swiss Congolese administrator. His confirmation now gives him the position on a permanent basis.
The son of former FIFA Executive Committee member Amos Adamu has built his career through several senior roles at CAF. These include Director of Competitions and Director of Tournaments and Events.

NFF Welcomes Adamu’s Appointment
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has congratulated Samson Adamu, describing his appointment as a major moment for Nigerian football.
The federation’s Acting General Secretary, Dr Emmanuel Ikpeme, praised Adamu’s knowledge and experience in football administration.
“This is, indeed, very good news. I am so happy for Samson Adamu on his confirmation and I know he is going to make Nigeria and Africa proud. He is a highly-knowledgeable individual who has never stopped improving himself, and he is well-rounded in the business of football administration,” acting General Secretary, Dr Emmanuel Ikpeme told thenff.com.
Ikpeme also assured Adamu of the federation’s support as he takes on the new role.
“The NFF is delighted and very pleased with this appointment, and we will give him all the necessary support as a Member Association under CAF. We wish him tremendous success in the job.”
Adamu’s appointment marks a significant achievement for Nigeria and gives the country a historic place in CAF’s top administration. It also places an experienced competitions official at the centre of the organisation’s work across African football.
