Los Angeles 2028 (LA28) organisers have unveiled ‘Stars Align’ as the official motto for the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The announcement came on Wednesday, alongside the worldwide premiere of a 60 second promotional film. It blends famous sporting moments with images of some of Los Angeles’s best known landmarks.
The motto reflects the city’s sporting ambition and its global reputation for entertainment. Los Angeles will host the Olympic Games for the third time in 2028. The event begins on 14 July, followed by the city’s first Paralympic Games on 15 August.
Athletes and fans from around the world will gather for both events. However, the message also recognizes the people working behind the scenes to make the Games happen.
‘Stars Align’ Celebrates Athletes, Volunteers and Fans
The LA28 organising committee says the motto celebrates coaches, organisers, partners, small businesses and volunteers. It also invites athletes to compete, volunteers to welcome visitors and fans to support their teams from the stands.
The slogan follows a long standing tradition of Olympic host cities choosing a message that reflects their identity. It is separate from the Olympic motto, ‘Faster, Higher, Stronger – Together’, and the Paralympic motto, ‘Change Starts with Sport’.
Previous host cities have also used slogans to capture the spirit of their events. Rio 2016 chose ‘A New World’, Tokyo 2020 adopted ‘United by Emotion’, while Paris 2024 used ‘Games Wide Open’.
For Los Angeles, the new motto highlights the power of sport to bring people from different countries together.
LA28 chairman Casey Wasserman said the choice reflected the city’s character and the shared experience of the Games.
“Los Angeles is the place where dreams take flight, and the Olympics show us what’s possible when the world unites”, he said.
“‘Stars Align’ is a call to action, whether you’re an athlete at the peak of your skill, a volunteer welcoming the world to these Games, or a fan cheering passionately from the stands”, he added, describing the new message as an open invitation.
The promotional film supports that message. Set to ‘Can’t Stop’ by Red Hot Chili Peppers, it combines memorable sporting moments with scenes from Los Angeles.
The video features the Hollywood Sign and Griffith Observatory, alongside the city’s famous sunsets. It also highlights the diversity of local communities and the cultural identity of the Californian host city.
Fans can watch the film on the official LA28 website and its social media channels. The International Olympic Committee and International Paralympic Committee have also shared it on their platforms.
LA28 chief marketing officer Alex Merchán said the film recognizes the years of hard work behind every major sporting achievement.
“The greatest moments in sport don’t just happen. Athletes work their whole lives for them”, he said.
He added that the campaign offered only a first glimpse of the celebrations ahead: “This film is just the spark for what’s to come”.
