Tottenham Hotspur secured a rare Premier League victory at Stamford Bridge as Chelsea suffered a 2-0 defeat and missed the chance to climb to third in the table.

Chelsea midfielder Cole Palmer received a red card in the 80th minute after picking up his second yellow card. It capped a frustrating night for Xabi Alonso’s side in a fiery London derby played in torrential rain.

Spurs took the lead in the 77th minute through a fortunate goal. Chelsea goalkeeper Mike Penders, making his first league start for the club after Emi Martinez suffered an injury, punched the ball into his own net under pressure from Jan Paul van Hecke at a corner.

Palmer then made Chelsea’s task even harder when he was sent off just three minutes later. The England midfielder received his first booking for barging into Mateus Fernandes. His second followed a late challenge on Conor Gallagher.

Tottenham took full advantage of their numerical superiority. French forward Mathys Tel sealed the win in the 87th minute with a low strike from 25 yards after a superb individual run from the halfway line.

Tottenham End Long Wait for Stamford Bridge Victory

The result marked only Tottenham’s second league win at Stamford Bridge in 36 years. Their previous Premier League away victory against Chelsea at the ground came on 1 April 2018, when they won 3-1.

The victory also gave Spurs back to back wins in a week as they continued to build momentum. They had claimed their first league victory of the campaign on Monday with a 3-1 home win over Coventry City.

That run lifted Tottenham to 12th place in the Premier League table. Meanwhile, Chelsea missed the opportunity to move into third after a night marked by Palmer’s dismissal and Penders’ costly mistake.

The result handed Tottenham a memorable derby win and left Chelsea with plenty to consider after a difficult evening at Stamford Bridge.
