Nigeria’s Super Falcons will on Thursday battle South Africa’s Banyana Banyana for a second opportunity to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup when the two African giants clash at the Moulay Rachid Stadium in Casablanca, Trybal News reports.

The 9pm encounter comes after both teams suffered quarter-final exits at the ongoing Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, leaving them with one final route to keep their World Cup dreams alive.

The winner of Thursday’s showdown will advance to the Inter-Confederation Playoff Tournament, where a further opportunity to secure a place at next year’s World Cup in Brazil awaits.

It is another high-stakes meeting between two of Africa’s biggest women’s football sides. The Super Falcons edged Banyana Banyana 2-1 in last year’s WAFCON semi-final in Casablanca, with Michelle Alozie scoring a dramatic stoppage-time winner.

South Africa, however, have also enjoyed important victories over Nigeria, particularly at the WAFCON, where Banyana defeated the Falcons in the 2012, 2018 and 2022 editions.

Despite those setbacks, Nigeria have the superior record in the rivalry, winning 17 of their competitive meetings against South Africa, compared with four victories for Banyana Banyana.

The two teams also battled for Olympic qualification in 2024, with Rasheedat Ajibade’s penalty in Abuja giving Nigeria a 1-0 aggregate victory after the second leg ended goalless in Pretoria.

Ajibade will again captain the Super Falcons on Thursday, while South Africa will rely heavily on the attacking threat of Thembi Kgatlana.

Nigeria will need to be more ruthless in front of goal after failing to convert their chances in Sunday’s quarter-final defeat to Cameroon.

With no room for another setback, the Super Falcons must now find a way past Banyana Banyana to take advantage of their second opportunity and remain in contention for a place at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
