Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi has suffered an ankle ligament injury in a blow to Beşiktaş ahead of their UEFA Europa League second qualifying round tie against Danish side FC Midtjylland, Trybal News reports.
The Turkish club confirmed the development after the Nigerian midfielder underwent medical examinations, with an MRI scan revealing ligament damage in his right ankle. Treatment has already commenced under the supervision of the club’s medical staff.
Although Beşiktaş did not provide an official recovery timeline, Ndidi is expected to miss Thursday’s first-leg encounter, while his chances of featuring in the return leg remain uncertain.
The injury comes at a crucial stage of the season, with new head coach Vincenzo Italiano preparing for his first European fixture in charge. Ndidi has become one of Beşiktaş’s most influential players since arriving from Leicester City, providing leadership, defensive stability and experience in midfield.
His absence is expected to leave a noticeable gap in Beşiktaş’s midfield, particularly in defensive transitions, aerial duels and ball recovery, forcing the coaching staff to rely on alternative options as they begin their European campaign.
The setback also raises questions over Ndidi’s immediate future amid reports linking the Nigerian international with a potential move away from the club during the current transfer window. However, the immediate focus will be on his recovery and return to full fitness ahead of the new season and Nigeria’s upcoming international fixtures.
Beşiktaş will be hoping their captain can make a swift recovery as they aim to progress in Europe despite being without one of their most experienced performers.
