Sporting CP made a winning start to their Champions League campaign by recovering from an early setback to beat Galatasaray 3-1. The Portuguese side fell behind inside five minutes but responded with greater control after the break.

Galatasaray struck first when Sporting captain Goncalo Ignacio bundled Rui Silva’s save over his own goal line. The goal gave the Turkish champions an ideal start and put Sporting under early pressure.

Sporting CP thought they had levelled soon after. Luis Suarez found the net, but the referee ruled out the effort for offside. The hosts, however, did not allow the setback to disrupt their momentum.

Just moments later, Geny Catamo restored parity with a superb half volley. He met the ball 14 yards from goal and guided his effort into the bottom corner to make it 1 to 1.

Sporting CP Turned the Game Around

The scoreline arguably flattered Sporting CP at half time, but the Portuguese side produced a much stronger display after the interval. They began to control the game and created the key moments that eventually decided the contest.

Sporting earned a penalty when Suarez went around Galatasaray goalkeeper Ugurcan Cakir before Ismail Jakobs clipped the striker inside the box. The officials then conducted a lengthy video assistant referee review before confirming the spot kick.

Suarez stepped up and showed composure to send his penalty into the bottom corner. The goal completed Sporting’s turnaround and gave the hosts a 2 to 1 advantage.

Sporting then struck again six minutes later to put the result beyond Galatasaray. Rodrigo Zalazar produced the standout finish of the night, curling a free kick from 22 yards into the top corner.

The goal also highlighted Sporting’s efficiency in front of goal. They scored three times from only five efforts on target during the contest.

Sporting finished with 1.55 expected goals from eight attempts, while Galatasaray recorded 1.02 expected goals from 10 shots. The numbers underline how the Portuguese side made the most of their opportunities after a difficult opening.

The victory gives Sporting CP the perfect start to their Champions League campaign. They will now travel to France for their next European fixture against Lens.

For Galatasaray, the defeat extends their struggles away from home in the competition. Their early goal offered hope that those problems had finally ended, but Sporting’s comeback proved otherwise.

Galatasaray will now return to RAMS Park for their next Champions League match. They face a major test against high flying Barcelona, with Victor Osimhen missing from the action as they look to respond to this disappointing result.
