Nigeria’s athletes heading to the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow have been handed a major boost after the National Sports Commission unveiled an improved reward package for medal winners, Trybal News reports.
Under the new incentive structure, every Nigerian athlete who wins gold will receive a total cash reward of $8,000, combining immediate bonuses and additional performance payments. Silver medalists are set to earn $5,000, while bronze medal winners will take home $3,000.
The Commission also revealed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is expected to host Team Nigeria’s medalists after the Games in recognition of their achievements on the international stage.
As preparations intensify, most of Team Nigeria has been camped in Aberdeen, Scotland, where athletes and coaches have been receiving daily allowances to support their training programme. Those allowances are expected to increase further once competition begins, reflecting the Commission’s commitment to improving athlete welfare and motivation.
In another significant development, Team Nigeria will compete in kits supplied by German sportswear giant PUMA during the Games.
The 2026 Commonwealth Games will take place from July 23 to August 2 in Glasgow, with Nigeria aiming to build on its strong showing at the previous edition in Birmingham, where Team Nigeria returned home with 34 medals, including 11 gold.
