Nigeria’s Flamingos will face Mexico in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco on Thursday, October 29, as they seek to build on their impressive victory over defending champions Korea DPR, Trybal News reports.

The Nigerian youngsters secured their place in the knockout stage after finishing second in Group B with six points from three matches, capping their group-stage campaign with a commanding 3-1 victory over the two-time defending champions.

Head coach Akeem Busari’s side will now face a Mexican team that claimed the bronze medal at the 2025 edition of the competition, setting up a challenging encounter as Nigeria pursue a place in the quarter-finals.

According to FIFA’s published match schedule, the Round of 16 fixture is scheduled for 3 p.m. on Thursday at the Women’s Football Complex in Salé, Morocco.

Flamingos Ride High After Champions Scalp

Nigeria enter the knockout stage with renewed confidence following their performance against Korea DPR on Friday.

Oluwakemi Adegbuyi opened the scoring in the 15th minute before Oluebube Umejiaku doubled the advantage in the 38th minute, finishing after a pass from Tosin Rafiu.

Kanyinsola Yusuf extended Nigeria’s lead in the 56th minute with a superb free-kick, putting the Flamingos firmly in control before Korea DPR pulled one back through Yu Jong Hyang’s penalty in the 82nd minute.

The result represented a significant response from the Nigerian side, who had suffered a 2-1 defeat to Poland after opening their campaign with a 2-0 victory over Puerto Rico.

Their six-point finish secured second place in Group B behind Korea DPR, while Poland also progressed from the group.

The victory demonstrated Nigeria’s attacking threat and ability to compete against elite opposition, qualities they will need to reproduce against Mexico.

Mexico Bring World Cup Pedigree

Mexico will present a different challenge for the Flamingos, having established themselves as one of the competition’s competitive sides in recent editions.

At the 2025 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, also hosted by Morocco, Mexico finished third after defeating Brazil 3-1 on penalties following a 1-1 draw in the third-place match.

Goalkeeper Valentina Murrieta played a decisive role in that victory, saving two penalties before Fernanda Monroy converted the winning kick. Mexico’s bronze-medal finish marked the country’s first podium appearance since 2018, when the team reached the final.

At the ongoing tournament, Mexico opened with a 2-0 defeat to Spain but responded with a 3-1 victory over Chile to revive its qualification hopes.

Mia Urbano, Citlalli Reyes and Nicole Jiménez scored in the comeback victory against Chile, underlining the team’s ability to recover from setbacks and produce decisive moments in attack.

The Mexican’s recent experience of competing deep into the tournament makes them a formidable opponent for Nigeria, although the Flamingos will take encouragement from their own performance against Korea DPR.

Tactical Discipline Could Prove Decisive

For Busari and his technical crew, preparations will centre on maintaining the attacking intensity displayed against Korea DPR while ensuring the team remains defensively organised.

Nigeria demonstrated their ability to exploit spaces behind an opposing defence, with Umejiaku’s goal highlighting the threat posed by their forward runs. Yusuf’s set-piece quality also provides another attacking weapon.

However, the Flamingos will need to manage possession carefully, remain alert to Mexico’s attacking movements and make the most of their opportunities.

The Round of 16 offers little margin for error, with defeat bringing an end to either team’s World Cup campaign.

Nigeria have already shown that they can rise to the occasion against highly rated opposition. Their challenge now is to turn that statement victory into sustained progress in the knockout stages.

With a quarter-final place at stake, the encounter against Mexico represents another important examination of the Flamingos quality, composure and ambitions on the global stage.
