Super Eagles defender Chibuike Nwaiwu has received a major boost ahead of Nigeria’s Unity Cup final against Jamaica after becoming a father for the first time.

The 22-year-old welcomed a baby girl with his partner Melissa just days before the highly anticipated clash against the Reggae Boyz at The Valley in London.

Turkish Super Lig club Trabzonspor confirmed the happy news on their official website, revealing that the couple named their daughter Jacinta.

“Our football player Chibuike Nwaiwu and Melissa couple had a daughter today,” reads a statement on Trabzonspor’s official website.
‎
“‎We wholeheartedly congratulate Chibuike Nwaiwu on the joy of becoming a father and wish their little one, whom they named Jacinta, a healthy and happy life.”

The announcement has capped a memorable week for the Nigerian defender, who also impressed during the Super Eagles 2-0 victory over Zimbabwe in the Unity Cup semi-final on Tuesday night.

Nwaiwu partnered Slavia Prague centre-back Igoh Ogbu in central defence as Nigeria kept a clean sheet and comfortably secured a place in the final.

The former Enyimba defender produced a composed display at the back and is now expected to retain his place in Éric Chelle’s starting lineup for Saturday’s final against Jamaica.

Following the strong performance against Zimbabwe, Chelle could stick with the same team that delivered an impressive result in the semi-final.

Chibuike Nwaiwu Rapid Rise From Enyimba to European Silverware

Nwaiwu’s rise over the past year has continued to attract attention both in Nigeria and Europe.

After leaving Nigeria Premier Football League giants Enyimba in 2024, the centre-back quickly adapted to life in Europe with Austrian side Wolfsberger AC.

He established himself as one of the club’s key defenders and played a vital role as Wolfsberger AC lifted the Austrian Cup during the 2024/25 campaign.

His consistent performances earned him a move to Trabzonspor in January, where he immediately settled into Turkish football.

Nwaiwu went on to help the Black Sea Storm secure a third-place finish in the Turkish Super Lig while also contributing to the club’s Turkish Cup triumph.

The former Heartland defender now heads into the Unity Cup final in high spirits as he looks to help Nigeria successfully defend the title against Jamaica while also celebrating a special moment in his personal life.
