Nigerian striker Taiwo Awoniyi has won the prestigious Beyond the Pitch Award at the 2026 Best of Africa Awards in London. The honour recognises his efforts to support communities and empower young people beyond his football career.
The Coventry City and Super Eagles forward plays as a central striker in the English Premier League. He is known for his goalscoring ability and physical presence up front. However, Awoniyi has also used his success to support community development, healthcare and youth empowerment in Nigeria.
One of his key projects is the Kwara Kiddies League. Taiwo Awoniyi funds and sponsors the grassroots football competition, which gives young players in Kwara State a chance to develop their skills in a structured environment.

The Best of Africa Awards take place in London each year. The ceremony celebrates Africans and people of African heritage who have made notable contributions to sport, entertainment and social impact.
Supported by the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA), the Beyond the Pitch Award recognises athletes who use their public profile to create positive change and support their home communities.
Taiwo Awoniyi shared his reaction to the award on Instagram, where he thanked those who recognised his work.
“Life can give you so much, but what truly matters is what you choose to do with what you’ve been given. Grateful to receive the PFA Beyond the Pitch Award at the Best of Africa Awards 2026.”
His work with the Kwara Kiddies League remains a major part of his community efforts. He fully funds the annual tournament and provides kits, equipment and cash prizes for grassroots teams in Ilorin and nearby areas.
These resources help young footballers access better opportunities and build pathways towards sustainable careers in the game. The award recognises Awoniyi’s commitment to making a difference beyond the pitch while continuing to represent Nigeria and Nottingham Forest at the highest level.
