Calvin Bassey and Alex Iwobi helped Fulham secure a narrow 1-0 win over Coventry City as Oscar Bobb’s late strike earned the visitors back to back Premier League victories.
The Nigerian duo played key roles in a hard fought contest that offered few clear chances. However, Bobb produced a moment of quality to settle the game and give Fulham a valuable away win.
Josh King came closest to scoring in the first half when his effort struck the crossbar. The rebound fell to Iwobi, but the midfielder could not convert from close range.
Coventry threatened mainly through counter attacks led by Brandon Thomas-Asante. Despite finding space on several occasions, the hosts struggled to turn their promising moves into goals.
Fulham also appealed for a penalty shortly before half time. Bassey appeared to tug an opponent’s shirt before Thomas-Asante pulled him down inside the box, but the referee did not award a spot kick.
Bassey Leads Fulham Defence as Bobb Delivers Late Winner
Coventry suffered a setback in the 60th minute when defender Bobby Thomas left the pitch with an injury. He had been one of the team’s standout performers this season while facing tough challenges in defence.
Even so, the hosts continued to absorb pressure and look for openings on the break. They created some dangerous attacking moves but could not find a way past Fulham’s defence.
With the match heading towards a draw, Bobb made the difference. The forward weaved past a defender in a crowded penalty area before firing an excellent shot into the bottom corner to claim all three points for Fulham.
Bassey led by example at the heart of the defence. The Fulham captain played the full 90 minutes and helped his team record a second consecutive clean sheet, taking their total to three in the Premier League this season.
The Nigerian defender made eight clearances and four recoveries. He also completed 92% of his passes, recorded 115 touches and covered 10.3km during an impressive display.
Iwobi also contributed in midfield before coming off in the 74th minute. He completed 86% of his passes, recorded 60 touches and made five recoveries. The midfielder covered 9.1km during his time on the pitch.
The result gave Fulham their first away league win in nine matches and lifted them to 12th in the table with eight points. They now sit two points above Coventry, who remain 19th after another difficult afternoon.
