Several of Africa’s leading clubs made strong starts in the CAF Confederation Cup Preliminary Round on Saturday, with some teams taking clear first leg advantages.

However, several ties remain open ahead of the return matches from September 11 to 13.

Angola’s Primeiro de Agosto claimed one of the weekend’s biggest results. They secured a 2-0 away win against Green Mamba of Eswatini and will take a healthy advantage into the second leg.

Shooting Stars also gave Nigerian football fans reason to celebrate. The Oluyole Warriors beat Tunisia’s CS Sfaxien 1-0 at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena in Abeokuta.

Lucky Emmanuel scored the only goal in the 25th minute. Nevertheless, the narrow advantage leaves Shooting Stars with a difficult away fixture in Tunisia.

Al Ahly Tripoli produced another impressive performance on the road. The Libyan club defeated Zanzibar’s KMKM 3-0 and now look strong favourites to secure their place in the next round.

Zambia’s Red Arrows also built a useful advantage at home. They defeated Madagascar’s FC Rouge 2-0 at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium.

Eliya Mundanji opened the scoring with a header in the 39th minute. Then, Alassane Diarra doubled the lead in the 57th minute to give Arrows greater control of the tie.

ASKO de Kara Take Major Step Towards Next Round of CAF Confederation Cup

ASKO de Kara delivered the biggest winning margin of the Preliminary Round so far. The Togolese side crushed Niger’s AS ZAM 5-0 away from home and now have one foot in the next round.

Meanwhile, Mozambique’s Black Bulls secured a narrow 1-0 away victory against Atomic Ngomé of Comoros. The result gives the Mozambican side a slight edge before the return match.

Kabuscorp de Palanca of Angola also claimed an important away win. They defeated Namibia’s UNAM 2-0 and will now look to complete the job in the second leg.

The tie between AS Douanes of Mauritania and Hafia FC of Guinea produced a more balanced contest. Both teams played out a 2-2 draw, giving Hafia a useful platform with the second leg still to come.

The winner of that tie will face Algeria’s CR Belouizdad in the Second Preliminary Round.

FC Diarra of Mali also secured a slim advantage. They defeated Ghana’s Nations FC 1-0 and will carry that lead into the second leg.

The First Preliminary Round return matches will take place from September 11 to 13.
