Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany has reportedly been taken to hospital after an emergency doctor attended the club’s training ground on Friday.
According to German newspaper BILD, the 40 year old Belgian was taken by ambulance to a hospital in Munich on Friday afternoon. An air ambulance helicopter also reportedly landed at Bayern’s Sabener Strasse training facility.
The incident comes after Kompany suffered a severe viral infection last week. Bayern have yet to issue an official statement confirming the circumstances of his hospital visit or providing an update on his condition.
Kompany Admits illness has Taken its Toll
Kompany spoke about his illness after Bayern’s 2-2 Champions League draw against Arsenal on Wednesday. He admitted that he had pushed himself too hard instead of allowing his body to recover.
“As a coach, you always want to do everything and take care of everything,” Kompany stated.
“I caught a pretty nasty virus last week, then of course I didn’t listen to my body, and eventually my body said: Now stop!”
The illness had already affected Kompany’s work at the club. During Bayern’s 6 to 1 victory over RB Leipzig, he reportedly had to lie down on a sofa in his office at half time and after the match.
The infection also reportedly caused problems with old scar tissue. As a result, even basic movements, such as climbing stairs, became difficult.
Kompany missed first team training sessions earlier in the week as he continued to recover. He also handed press conference duties to assistant coach Aaron Danks.
Speaking on Tuesday, Danks stressed that the Bayern manager needed time to rest and recover fully.
“The most important thing, which we are encouraging him to do right now, is to rest and take the time he needs – however long that may take,” Danks said on Tuesday.
The reason for Friday’s reported emergency transfer to hospital remains unclear. Bayern have not confirmed further details about the incident or Kompany’s current condition.
