The Senegalese Football Federation has dismissed reports claiming national team head coach Pape Thiaw refused to travel to the United States because of a contract dispute ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup preparations.
Reports had emerged earlier suggesting Thiaw was frustrated over ongoing negotiations with the federation after his contract reportedly expired in February. It was also claimed that the disagreement delayed Senegal’s departure to the United States by almost eight hours.
However, the FSF has now firmly rejected those reports and clarified that the delay was caused by logistical difficulties involving flight permits and visa arrangements.
In an official statement released by the federation, the FSF insisted the rumours surrounding Thiaw’s situation were completely false.
“The Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) wishes to inform the national and international public of the circumstances surrounding the departure of the national football team to the United States, in order to establish the truth of the facts in response to erroneous information relayed by certain media outlets and on social networks,” a statement said.
“The FSF categorically denies the unfounded rumours suggesting that the national team manager refused to travel on grounds related to the renegotiation of his contract. Whilst legitimate contractual discussions are ongoing, they have had no impact on the team’s travel schedule.
“These minor logistical setbacks in no way undermine the cohesion and determination of the players, the technical staff and the federation. The group remains fully united as the Lions approach the important fixtures awaiting them on American soil. The FSF will ensure that the calm atmosphere necessary for excellent preparation is maintained.”
Pape Thiaw’s Rise Continues as Senegal Targets Fourth World Cup Appearance
Pape Thiaw has enjoyed a remarkable rise since taking charge of the Teranga Lions in December 2024.
The 45-year-old guided Senegal to victory at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations earlier this year after defeating Morocco in a controversial final.
That match drew major attention after Senegal’s players and coaching staff temporarily walked off the pitch to protest a late penalty awarded to Morocco during stoppage time.
Play resumed after a 14-minute delay, but Morocco star Brahim Diaz failed to convert the spot kick before Senegal eventually secured a 1-0 victory after extra time.
Despite the result on the pitch, the title was later awarded to Morocco following an appeal lodged with the Confederation of African Football.
Senegal subsequently took the matter to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, although a final ruling is not expected anytime soon.
Attention has now shifted to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where Senegal will make their fourth appearance at the tournament.
The Teranga Lions have been drawn in Group I and will open their campaign against France on June 16 in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
They will also face Norway on June 22 before completing the group stage against Iraq in Toronto on June 26.
Before the tournament begins, Senegal are scheduled to play two international friendlies in the United States.
They will first take on the United States in Charlotte, North Carolina on Sunday before facing Saudi Arabia in San Antonio, Texas on June 9.
With preparations continuing ahead of the World Cup, the federation remains confident that the team remains fully focused despite the recent speculation surrounding the coach’s future.
