The Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) has officially unveiled the men’s 3×3 basketball team that will represent the country at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, selecting a blend of domestic and international talent as Nigeria targets a podium finish, Trybal News reports.
The three-man squad comprises Esosa Kelvin Okundaye, Marcel Esonwune, and Robert Chima Ukawuba, bringing together athleticism, international experience, and defensive strength ahead of the competition.
Benin-born Okundaye, who will wear jersey number nine, is expected to provide pace, energy, and attacking flair in the fast-paced format. His ability to create scoring opportunities and thrive in transition is seen as a key asset for the Nigerian side.
Joining him is New York-based Marcel Esonwune (jersey number 12), whose experience competing in the United States is expected to add leadership and composure. As one of the team’s most experienced players, Esonwune is anticipated to play a vital role both on and off the court.
Completing the roster is Lagos-born Robert Chima Ukawuba, who will wear jersey number four. Renowned for his defensive presence and physical style of play, Ukawuba is expected to anchor Nigeria’s defence in a discipline where every possession can prove decisive.
The squad arrived in Glasgow after completing an intensive training camp at a high-performance facility in Europe, with the federation expressing confidence that the players are in optimal condition for the Games.
In a further boost, the National Sports Commission has provided welfare support for the team, ensuring the players can focus entirely on their preparations as they aim to challenge for Commonwealth Games honours.
Nigeria will be hoping the carefully assembled squad can make a strong statement on the international stage and add another chapter to the country’s growing reputation in 3×3 basketball.
