Oyedeji, a former NBA player and respected sports administrator, will represent the World Olympians Association (WOA) on the IOC Athletes Commission, an influential 23-member body that serves as the collective voice of athletes worldwide.

Currently serving as Secretary of the WOA and Chairman of the Nigeria Athletes Commission, Oyedeji’s appointment reflects years of consistent advocacy for athlete welfare, rights, and post-career development across both national and international platforms.

Nigeria’s Growing Voice in the Olympic Movement

Further strengthening Nigeria’s footprint, table tennis icon Olufunke Oshonaike has also secured a position on the commission. Her inclusion underscores Nigeria’s rising influence and credibility within global Olympic structures.

The commission boasts diverse continental representation, featuring prominent figures such as Gabby Ahrens (Africa), Isabel Swan (Pan America), Ronald Rauhe (Europe), Kenneth Wallace (Oceania), and Ning Ding (Asia).

Leadership at the Highest Level

The IOC Athletes Commission is chaired by Spanish basketball legend Pau Gasol, with vice chairs including Maja Włoszczowska, Humphrey Kayange, and Oluseyi Smith.

As one of the IOC’s most influential bodies, the commission plays a critical role in shaping policies that impact athletes globally, ranging from competition conditions to career transition support. Members serve eight-year terms, with elections conducted during Olympic Games cycles.

A Strategic Win for Nigerian Athletes

Oyedeji’s elevation is widely regarded as a landmark moment for Nigerian sport. A former professional basketball centre who featured in the NBA, he has successfully transitioned into leadership, currently serving as President of the Nigeria Olympians Association and Vice President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee.

His appointment signals a new era of stronger representation, greater influence, and increased opportunities for Nigerian athletes on the global stage.
