Goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo is now officially eligible to play for Nigeria after FIFA approved his switch of international allegiance from England, marking an important development for the Super Eagles.
The decision was confirmed on April 6, 2026, through FIFA’s Change of Association platform, where Okonkwo’s registration was updated from The Football Association of England to the Nigeria Football Federation.
Born on September 9, 2001, in Camden, London, to Nigerian parents of Igbo descent, the 24-year-old began his football journey at Arsenal’s academy at the age of eight. Standing close to two metres tall, he developed through the ranks and represented England at youth level, featuring for the U-15, U-16, U-17 and U-18 teams between 2015 and 2019. However, he never made a senior appearance for England, making him eligible to switch under FIFA rules.
Arthur Okonkwo is currently the first-choice goalkeeper at Wrexham in the EFL Championship, where he has been in impressive form since completing a permanent move from Arsenal. This season, he has made 42 appearances across all competitions, recording 11 clean sheets and playing a total of 3,751 minutes.
His consistent displays and crucial saves have played a key role in Wrexham’s campaign, while also attracting attention as a strong option for Nigeria’s goalkeeping department.
The move to represent Nigeria comes after discussions with Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle during the Unity Cup in London last year, although administrative delays meant he missed out on selection for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
With his switch now completed, Okonkwo adds further quality and competition to Nigeria’s goalkeeping options, joining the likes of Stanley Nwabali and Maduka Okoye as the team continues to build for upcoming international assignments.
