Nigeria head coach Eric Chelle has declared that the Super Eagles are fully prepared to defend their Unity Cup title when they take on Jamaica in Saturday’s final in London, Trybal News reports.

Nigeria and Jamaica secured their places in the final after recording identical 2-0 victories in the semi-finals. The Super Eagles overcame Zimbabwe courtesy of a brace from debutant Femi Azeez, while the Reggae Boyz defeated India through goals from Courtney Clarke and Kaheim Dixon.

The final will mark the third meeting between Nigeria and Jamaica in the history of the Afro-Caribbean tournament, which celebrates the rich connection between football, music and culture in the British capital.

Nigeria lifted the trophy in dramatic fashion last year after a fiercely contested final against Jamaica ended 2-2. Goals from Moses Simon and Samuel Chukwueze twice handed the Super Eagles the lead, but the Reggae Boyz responded on each occasion through Kaheim Dixon and Jon Russell. The encounter was eventually settled by a penalty shootout, with Nigeria converting all five spot-kicks while Jamaica’s Dwayne Atkinson missed the decisive effort.

While several members of the title-winning squad are absent from this year’s competition, Chelle’s youthful side delivered an impressive performance against Zimbabwe to underline their determination to retain the trophy.

Ahead of Saturday’s showdown, the Franco-Malian tactician emphasised that his focus remains solely on victory, regardless of how the match unfolds.

Penalties are part of the game and can decide who wins a match. Every time I go into a game, I have the mentality to win,” Chelle said.

This is the culture I have put in these boys a winning culture. I don’t know if Saturday’s game will end in penalties, what I know is that I have prepared my team to win.

These are very young players with a bright future and they are hungry for success at every level. On Saturday, we will see how the game is decided, but we have prepared to win and defend the Unity Cup.”

With confidence growing within the camp and a new generation of players eager to make their mark, Nigeria will be aiming to successfully defend their crown against a Jamaican side equally determined to claim the trophy.
