Super Falcons defender Ashley Plumptre will not be part of Nigeria’s squad for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco as she continues her recovery ahead of a return to competitive action, Trybal News reports.
The 28-year-old has been recuperating from the foot injury that required surgery earlier this year, with the defender opting to give herself additional time before returning to competition.
“The body is asking for more time and I’m listening,” Plumptre wrote in a message shared on social media.
Plumptre was a vital member of the Super Falcons side that secured Nigeria’s record-extending 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title, playing a key role throughout the tournament as Nigeria defeated hosts Morocco 3-2 in the final to lift the trophy.
Despite the disappointment of missing this year’s tournament, the defender expressed optimism about returning to represent Nigeria once she is fully fit.
“Sad to be missing this WAFCON yet hopeful in the prospect of getting to fight alongside these women again with the support of Nigerians everywhere when the body is ready to compete again,” she said.
Plumptre also called on Nigerians to continue supporting the Super Falcons as they pursue a record-extending 11th continental title in Morocco.
“So, in the meantime, back these women, back them on their quest for victory once more. Go easy on them, they need you. I am with you ladies,” she added.
Nigeria will face Egypt, Zambia and Malawi in Group C as the defending champions begin their campaign in Morocco from 26 July to 16 August.
