Nigeria will host the 2027 Africa Beach Volleyball Championship in Lagos, further strengthening the country’s ambition to become a leading destination for international sporting events on the continent, Trybal News reports.
The hosting rights were secured through a strategic partnership between the National Sports Commission (NSC) and the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA), marking another major milestone in Nigeria’s growing relationship with Africa’s Olympic movement.
The announcement comes shortly after Nigeria was also confirmed as host of the second edition of the African School Games in 2027, highlighting increasing confidence in the country’s ability to deliver major international competitions.

Speaking in Abuja, ANOCA President Mustapha Berraf praised the ongoing reforms within Nigeria’s sports sector, describing the country as one of Africa’s emerging sporting leaders under the stewardship of NSC Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko and Director General Hon. Bukola Olopade.
Berraf commended the Federal Government’s renewed commitment to sports development and said Nigeria’s proven record in hosting major events played a significant role in the decision.
He referenced Nigeria’s successful organisation of the African U-18 and U-20 Athletics Championships in Abeokuta, where the country stepped in at short notice and delivered the event after only three months of preparation.
According to him, such achievements reflect a nation that is intentional and ambitious about using sport as a vehicle for development and continental leadership.
NSC Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko said securing the championship aligns with the Commission’s strategy of growing the country’s sports economy through the attraction of major international competitions.
We are serious about boosting Nigeria’s sports economy, and attracting world-class sporting events is a key part of that vision,” he stated.
Director General Hon. Bukola Olopade attributed the recent successes to strong political backing for sports development, describing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as one of Nigeria’s strongest supporters of sport.
Meanwhile, discussions are at an advanced stage for Nigeria to host Africa’s qualification events for the 2030 Olympic Games. ANOCA and the African Union are exploring plans to stage the qualifiers in Nigeria, reducing the need for African nations to travel outside the continent in pursuit of Olympic qualification.
