Kylian Mbappe scored twice, including a decisive 87th minute winner, as Real Madrid beat Barcelona in a thrilling El Clasico at Camp Nou.

Barcelona had hoped to make history by setting a new record for consecutive wins at the start of a Spanish top flight season. However, Hansi Flick’s side fell short of the nine straight victories achieved by Real Madrid in the 1968 to 1969 campaign.

Mbappe opened the scoring four minutes before half time. His goal came with a slice of luck after Gerard Martin tried to clear Yan Diomande’s low cross. The ball struck the France striker and flew past goalkeeper Joan Garcia.

Both teams created chances before the opener. However, the contest became more open as half time approached. Mbappe struck the post, while Barcelona teenager Lamine Yamal missed a clear opportunity at the other end when he side footed wide from close range.

Mbappe Strikes Again to Secure Real Madrid Victory

Barcelona captain Raphinha brought his team level 16 minutes into the second half. He collected a pass from Pedri before shooting through Jude Bellingham’s legs and finding the far corner.

Martin almost made amends for his role in Real Madrid’s opening goal soon afterwards. However, Andriy Lunin produced an outstanding one handed save to keep out his header.

Lunin started in place of first choice goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, who missed the match because of illness. The Ukraine international made three first half saves from England winger Anthony Gordon and proved a reliable replacement in his first club appearance of the season.

With the match heading towards a draw, Bellingham produced a moment of skill near the halfway line to launch Real Madrid’s decisive attack. Substitute Eduardo Camavinga drove forward before squaring the ball for Mbappe, who finished into an unguarded net in the 87th minute.

Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho celebrated the winner with a small knee slide beside the dugout and a fist pump.

The result left Barcelona top of La Liga with a two point lead over second placed Atletico Madrid after 10 matches. Real Madrid moved to third, one point behind their rivals.

Mbappe continued his impressive scoring record in El Clasico since joining Real Madrid from Paris St Germain in the summer of 2024. The 27 year old has now scored eight goals in seven appearances against Barcelona across all competitions.

However, Real Madrid had won only one of the six previous matches in which Mbappe featured. That run included a 4 to 3 league defeat in May 2025, when he scored a hat trick but still ended on the losing side.

The France forward has now scored 11 league goals this season, including his two strikes at Camp Nou. Only Raphinha, with 13 goals, has scored more often in La Liga this campaign.

Real Madrid secured the victory despite missing suspended forward Vinicius Jr and Courtois. Lunin stepped up in the Belgian goalkeeper’s absence, and his crucial save from Martin’s header helped prevent Barcelona from taking the lead before Mbappe delivered the decisive blow.
