Gonzalo Plata scored the decisive goal as Ecuador fought back to beat Germany 2-1 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, sealing a dramatic place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup knockout stage as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams.

The result completed a remarkable turnaround for Sebastian Beccacece’s side, who entered the match knowing only a victory would keep their World Cup hopes alive. Ecuador had collected just one point from their opening two matches after a 1-0 defeat to Ivory Coast and a goalless draw against Curacao, leaving them without a goal before facing Germany.

Germany, already through to the knockout stage, made a perfect start. Leroy Sane fired Julian Nagelsmann’s side ahead after just two minutes with a clinical left-footed finish. David Raum’s throw found Aleksandar Pavlovic, who laid the ball off to Florian Wirtz before Sane drilled his effort into the bottom corner.

Ecuador protested the goal, claiming Pavlovic had used a high boot during the build-up, but a VAR review allowed the strike to stand. Sane’s effort, scored after one minute and 49 seconds, became Germany’s second-fastest World Cup goal, behind only Ernst Lehner’s strike against Austria in 1934.

The South Americans responded brilliantly just seven minutes later. John Yeboah’s pressure forced Nmecha into a mistake before Pedro Vite quickly released Nilson Angulo. The Sunderland winger produced a superb curling effort from outside the penalty area that nestled into the bottom corner to level the score at 1-1.

The goal ended Ecuador’s frustrating 242-minute wait for a World Cup goal, their longest scoring drought in the competition. Remarkably, it also came from Ecuador’s 40th shot of the tournament. Angulo also became the fourth Sunderland player to score at this World Cup, with only Paris Saint-Germain having more individual scorers.

Germany struggled to regain control after conceding. Before this match, they had gone unbeaten in 10 World Cup group games against South American opponents, winning seven and drawing three while conceding only five goals. Ecuador, however, looked the more dangerous side for much of the first half.

Jamal Musiala came closest for Germany before the break after Wirtz created space with a clever pass, but Joel Ordonez produced a superb block to keep the scores level. Referee Tori Penso then brought an entertaining first half to an end with both teams locked at 1-1.

Germany thought they had earned a penalty moments after the restart when Kai Havertz went down under a challenge from Ordonez. However, VAR advised referee Penso to review the incident after spotting a foul by Sane on Vite earlier in the move. Following the review, the penalty was correctly overturned.

Ecuador continued to threaten and almost restored their advantage midway through the second half. John Yeboah found Enner Valencia outside the area, but Manuel Neuer reacted well to tip the striker’s powerful volley away.

The match then swung from end to end. Germany almost gifted Ecuador another goal after confusion between Neuer and Jonathan Tah allowed Kevin Rodriguez to keep the attack alive. Moises Caicedo then found Plata, but the winger failed to hit the target from a promising position.

Germany immediately threatened at the other end. Neuer launched a long ball forward that found Deniz Undav, whose flick released Sane through on goal. However, the Bayern Munich forward completely miscued his effort, allowing Hernan Galindez to gather comfortably.

Just a minute later, Ecuador found the breakthrough that changed their tournament. Caicedo’s corner was flicked on brilliantly by Rodriguez at the near post, and Gonzalo Plata reacted first to poke the ball past Neuer from close range. The German goalkeeper hesitated as Plata nipped in to score the decisive goal in the 77th minute.

The goal proved costly for Neuer, who has now conceded four goals while making only three saves during this World Cup. Ecuador, meanwhile, moved within touching distance of the knockout rounds.

Germany pushed hard for a late equaliser. Deep into stoppage time, David Raum picked out Pascal Gross, who teed up Undav inside the box. However, the striker could only fire into the side netting from a tight angle as Ecuador held firm.

The final whistle sparked wild celebrations among the Ecuador players and supporters. Plata’s winner secured four points, enough to send Ecuador through as one of the tournament’s eight best third-placed teams. Bosnia-Herzegovina also confirmed their place in the knockout stage through the same route.

Ecuador’s victory also marked only the second time they have won a World Cup match after conceding first, matching their 2-1 comeback victory over Honduras in 2014. They could now face England in the round of 32.

Germany had arrived unbeaten in 11 consecutive matches across all competitions after opening the tournament with a 7-1 victory over Curacao and a dramatic 2-1 win over Ivory Coast. They had also won both previous meetings with Ecuador, including a 3-0 World Cup victory in 2006 and a 4-2 friendly success in 2013. However, Ecuador produced one of the tournament’s biggest surprises to keep their World Cup dream alive.
