The Nigeria international needed only five minutes to make his mark at Papara Park, rising at the far post to head Aral Şimşir’s cross beyond the goalkeeper.

Trabzonspor doubled their advantage from the penalty spot in the 14th minute, with Mohamed Salah calmly converting after Chibuike Nwaiwu was fouled inside the box.

Onuachu struck again eight minutes later to put the hosts firmly in control, ending a frustrating eight-match wait for a league goal.

Nigerian defender Nwaiwu also turned in a solid performance at the back, helping Trabzonspor maintain their advantage as the hosts controlled the game. His contribution was particularly important in a commanding defensive display that ended with a clean sheet.

However, Onuachu’s return to form was overshadowed by an injury concern shortly before half-time. The 31-year-old was withdrawn in the 44th minute, with Franculino Djú introduced in his place.

Trabzonspor continued their dominance after the break, with Ernest Muçi adding a fourth goal in the 59th minute before Djú completed the rout 19 minutes later.

The emphatic victory provided Trabzonspor with a much-needed response and underlined their attacking strength, but attention in Nigeria will now be focused on the condition of Onuachu.

The striker’s injury comes at an unfortunate time for the Super Eagles, with Nigeria preparing to begin their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign later this month.

Nigeria are already monitoring the fitness of Victor Osimhen following the Galatasaray forward’s recent injury, making Onuachu’s situation another potential concern for head coach Eric Chelle.

The Super Eagles will hope the injury is minor and that the experienced striker will be available when Nigeria begin their qualifying campaign.

For Onuachu, the afternoon delivered both encouragement and uncertainty. His brace ended a lengthy scoring drought and restored his confidence in front of goal, but his early departure means his immediate fitness will now be the priority.
