Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle expressed pride in his team’s performance after Nigeria successfully defended the Unity Cup title with a commanding 3-0 victory over Jamaica at The Valley Stadium in London. However, the tactician also used the occasion to apologize to Nigerians for the team’s failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and their inability to win the Africa Cup of Nations.
Nigeria delivered one of their most complete performances under Eric Chelle as Alhassan Yusuf scored twice while captain Terem Moffi added a goal to secure a convincing victory over the Reggae Boyz. The result ensured the Super Eagles retained the Unity Cup crown and ended the tournament on a high note.
Speaking during his post match press conference, Eric Chelle revealed that he challenged his players with three specific objectives before the final. While he declined to disclose the details, he credited the players for carrying out the plan successfully on the pitch.
“The team talk before the game, I gave them 3 objectives. I cannot tell you, before you say he believes that he’s the best coach in the world. So you can ask them, the players, what the objective was.”
Eric Chelle Apologises Again for World Cup, AFCON Failures
The former Mali coach praised the commitment shown by his squad throughout the tournament and highlighted the importance of maintaining high standards despite the match being outside a major competition.
Despite celebrating the victory, Eric Chelle attention quickly turned to the disappointment of Nigeria’s recent failures on the international stage. The coach appeared emotional as he reflected on the Super Eagles’ absence from the upcoming FIFA World Cup and the missed opportunity to lift the AFCON title.
“I want to once again say sorry we didn’t go to the World Cup. Now, actually, this is my feeling: sorry because we didn’t win the AFCON. I tried to do my job, and I want to say thank you for all the support that they put in that team. Once again, if I have time, I will give everything for this national team. But football is football, and every day I try to improve as a man and as a coach. I would like to say thank you to this country.”
Chelle’s comments reflected both gratitude and determination as he acknowledged the expectations of Nigerian football supporters. Although the Super Eagles missed out on the global showpiece, the Unity Cup triumph offered a positive response and provided encouragement for the future.
Nigeria’s victory over Jamaica was built on discipline, intensity and clinical finishing. Alhassan Yusuf opened the scoring early before Terem Moffi doubled the advantage in the second half. Yusuf then completed his brace deep into stoppage time to seal an emphatic 3-0 win.
The result handed the Super Eagles another piece of silverware and extended their successful run in the Unity Cup, while Chelle and his players now look ahead to future challenges with renewed confidence.
