The United States national team has officially confirmed the 26 man squad that will represent the country at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with the tournament set to be co hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada.
A balanced squad filled with experienced internationals, established European based stars and exciting young talents was unveiled by head coach Mauricio Pochettino as preparations continue ahead of the global showpiece.
Several notable decisions were made in the final selection. While Alejandro Zendejas earned a place in the squad following his impressive performances in Liga MX, players such as Diego Luna and Tanner Tessmann were left out despite being strongly linked with possible inclusion in many projected World Cup lists.
The goalkeeping department will be led by Matt Freese of New York City FC alongside Matt Turner and Chris Brady. Across the defensive line, Premier League experience has been included through players such as Chris Richards and Antonee Robinson, while Sergiño Dest, Joe Scally and Tim Ream also provide valuable international experience.
In midfield, the United States will rely heavily on the leadership and energy of Tyler Adams and Weston McKennie. Additional creativity and attacking support will be provided by Gio Reyna, Malik Tillman and Brenden Aaronson, while Sebastian Berhalter and Cristian Roldán were also rewarded with places in the squad.
The attacking department features some of the biggest names in American football. Christian Pulisic will lead the frontline alongside Tim Weah, Folarin Balogun, Ricardo Pepi, Alejandro Zendejas and Haji Wright as the Americans prepare for one of the most important tournaments in the country’s football history.
Much attention will naturally be focused on Christian Pulisic, who arrives at the World Cup as the undisputed leader of the national team and arguably in the finest form of his career.
The AC Milan winger has continued to establish himself as one of the greatest American players of the modern era through his performances in Europe. Furthermore, the pressure of playing a World Cup on home soil is expected to place even greater responsibility on his shoulders.
With years of experience at elite level football and a proven record in major matches, Pulisic will be expected to inspire the United States throughout the tournament as the team aims to produce the best World Cup campaign in its history.
Meanwhile, Alejandro Zendejas emerged as one of the biggest talking points following the squad announcement. Strong performances for Club América were rewarded after Mauricio Pochettino was convinced by the winger’s consistency and attacking quality during the season.
On the other hand, the omission of Diego Luna came as a surprise to many supporters after the Real Salt Lake midfielder delivered several impressive displays in recent months.
Expectations surrounding the United States have naturally increased because of their status as tournament hosts. Playing at home is expected to bring enormous pressure, but belief within the squad remains high due to the quality and experience available across the team.
With players competing in some of the strongest leagues in world football and an internationally respected coach like Mauricio Pochettino in charge, the USMNT will attempt to use home support as motivation in pursuit of a historic World Cup run.
