AFN Unveils Squad for World Athletics Relays in Botswana

The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has officially unveiled a formidable squad ahead of the 2026 World Athletics Relays scheduled to take place from May 2 to 3 in Gaborone, Botswana.

The list, compiled by the federation’s Technical Committee following a successful entry process, reflects a strategic blend of seasoned performers and promising young talents as Nigeria sets its sights on a strong outing on the global stage.

Leading the team are established names such as Patience Okon George, Chidi Okezie, Ojeli Ifeanyi Emmanuel, Enoch Adegoke and Favour Ashe, all of whom bring a wealth of international experience. Also drawing attention is Blessing Ogundiran, widely regarded as the new queen on the block, as she continues to rise in Nigerian athletics.

In a clear nod to the future, the AFN has extended opportunities to emerging talents including Gafari Badmus, Asuquo Ezekiel Eno, Lawrence Jacinta, the youngest member of the squad alongside Jimoh Toheebat and Tejiri Godwin. Their inclusion underscores the federation’s commitment to building depth and sustaining long-term success.

Nigeria is set to compete in all six relay events at the championships, highlighting the federation’s ambition to secure podium finishes across multiple categories.

AFN President Tonobok Okowa expressed confidence in the selected athletes, noting that the blend of youth and experience positions Team Nigeria for a highly competitive performance in Gaborone.

With preparations intensifying, expectations are high that the team will rise to the occasion and reaffirm Nigeria’s status as a powerhouse in global relay competitions.
