Onyeka announced himself in emphatic fashion, scoring his first goal for the club in the 12th minute. From a difficult angle just inside the box, the Nigerian midfielder curled a superb effort that sailed past the Derby goalkeeper to give the home side an early lead.

Beyond his stunning goal, Onyeka’s all-round display underlined his growing importance in midfield. He recorded 50 touches, completed 24 of his 36 passes, and showed his physical presence by contesting 11 ground duels, winning seven. Defensively, he also contributed with two successful tackles, capping a complete performance.

The early strike helped set the tone for an entertaining contest at the Coventry Building Society Arena, with the hosts ultimately holding on to secure all three points.

The result further strengthens Coventry City’s grip at the top of the Championship table. They now have 83 points from 40 matches, sitting nine points clear of second-placed Millwall with just six games remaining in the regular season.

Onyeka, on a season-long loan from Brentford, is increasingly becoming a key figure in Coventry’s promotion push. The loan agreement reportedly includes an option for a permanent transfer should the Sky Blues secure promotion to the Premier League.

With his first goal now in the bag and performances steadily improving, Onyeka’s influence could prove decisive as Coventry close in on a return to the top flight.
