Fleetwood Town produced a remarkable Carabao Cup upset by beating Premier League champions Arsenal in a penalty shootout to book their place in the quarter finals.

The League Two side, ranked 84 places below Arsenal in the English football pyramid, shocked Mikel Arteta’s team in front of their home fans at Highbury Stadium. Aaron Loupalo Bi gave Fleetwood an unexpected lead in the 21st minute, leaving Arsenal with work to do.

Viktor Gyokeres equalised for the visitors after half time. However, Arsenal wasted several chances to take control of the tie and eventually paid the price for their poor finishing.

The Gunners suffered another setback in the 86th minute when teenage forward Max Dowman received a red card. The young player kicked out after a heavy challenge from Harrison Neal, leaving Arsenal to face the closing stages with 10 men.

Jay Lynch then became Fleetwood’s hero. The goalkeeper produced two outstanding late saves to deny Ben White and Martin Odegaard, forcing the tie into a penalty shootout and giving the home side a chance to complete a famous victory.

Lynch Inspires Fleetwood as Haughey Seals Historic Win

Lynch continued his impressive performance in the shootout by saving Bruno Guimaraes’ penalty. Conor Haughey then converted the decisive spot kick, sparking wild celebrations among the Fleetwood players and supporters.

Fans poured onto the pitch as the final whistle confirmed one of the biggest shocks in the competition’s history. Players swore during their post match interviews, while manager Matt Lawlor broke down in tears as he celebrated the achievement with his team.

Arsenal dominated possession but could not find a way past the determined League Two side. They enjoyed 78 per cent of the ball, registered 26 shots and put seven efforts on target. The visitors also recorded 59 touches inside the Fleetwood penalty area, yet they failed to turn their superiority into victory.

The result marked a huge achievement for Fleetwood, who showed resilience under sustained pressure before delivering when it mattered most. Their defence stood firm late in the game, while Lynch’s saves and Haughey’s winning penalty completed an unforgettable night at Highbury Stadium.

Fleetwood will now wait to discover their opponents in the Carabao Cup quarter finals. The draw will take place after Chelsea face Liverpool on Wednesday.
