Former Super Eagles head coach Augustine Eguavoen has been handed interim responsibility for the Super Falcons ahead of Nigeria’s opening fixtures in the race for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games, Trybal News reports.

Eguavoen, who will oversee the team as the search for a permanent head coach continues, is set to lead Nigeria against Comoros in the second round of the African qualifiers in October.
The experienced coach will be joined by Nasarawa Amazons head coach Christopher Danjuma, who brings extensive experience from Nigeria’s women’s national teams, including his work with the Falconets.
Former Super Eagles goalkeeper trainer Olatunji Baruwa has also been included in the technical crew, while former Super Falcons defender Ayisat Yusuf will serve as an assistant coach.
Eguavoen previously guided the Super Eagles to a bronze medal at the 2006 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt and will now be tasked with steering the 10-time African champions through the early stages of the Olympic qualification campaign.
Nigeria, who received a bye into the second round as one of the three highest-ranked teams in the competition, will face Comoros over two legs at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne-Remo on October 9 and 13.
Comoros booked their place in the second round after a commanding 30-0 aggregate victory over Sudan.
The Super Falcons must navigate four rounds of two-legged ties to claim one of Africa’s two tickets to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. A victory over Comoros would send Nigeria into the third round, where they could meet either Morocco or the Democratic Republic of Congo in February 2027.
The final stages of the qualification race will continue through 2027, with Nigeria needing to emerge from the knockout rounds to secure a return to the Olympic Games.
