Wellity Lucky Omoruyi has emerged as one of the young players open to representing Nigeria as the Super Eagles prepare for the upcoming Unity Cup in London, with head coach Eric Chelle set to name a fresh looking squad.

The Liverpool U21 defender, born in Spain but of Nigerian descent, is eligible to play for three countries, yet he appears willing to commit to Nigeria if given the opportunity. According to his representative, the 19 year old would not hesitate to accept a call up.

“If he is an option for Nigeria then he will gladly head to the camp in London for the Unity Cup. It’s hard to say to a football country like Nigeria when they call you”, Wellity Lucky representative told OwnGoalNigeria.com.

Chelle has already made it clear that he will not rely on his regular stars for the invitational tournament. Instead, he plans to give opportunities to players from the Nigeria Premier Football League, as well as fringe players and those competing in lesser known but competitive European leagues. Nigeria will begin their title defence against Zimbabwe, before facing either Jamaica or India later in the competition.

Omoruyi’s inclusion would represent a bold move given his current status. The young defender is yet to establish himself fully in the senior team at Liverpool FC, although he did make his first team debut in the Carabao Cup against Crystal Palace in October 2025.

Despite his limited senior experience, he is highly rated within Liverpool’s academy, where he has progressed steadily since joining as an under 13 player. A right footed defender capable of playing both centre back and right back, Omoruyi is known for his composure on the ball and strong physical presence.

His situation mirrors that of Benjamin Frederick, who earned a chance with Nigeria at the same tournament despite also playing at youth level in England, and went on to impress.

With Chelle keen to assess new talent and build depth ahead of future competitions, the Unity Cup could provide the perfect stage for Omoruyi to stake his claim and begin his international journey with Nigeria.
