World record holder Tobi Amusan delivered another dominant performance on Wednesday after Nigeria’s first gold medal at the ongoing Senior African Athletics Championships in Accra, Ghana, was secured in the women’s 100m hurdles final.

The Nigerian star powered to victory after earlier dominating both the heats and semi-finals with the fastest times in the competition. Her latest triumph also confirmed her status as one of Africa’s greatest hurdlers.

Fellow Nigerian hurdler Adaobi Tabugbo also impressed in the final after finishing third to claim her first individual medal for Nigeria at the continental championships. A Nigerian one-two finish was, however, denied by Ashley Miller, who claimed second place in the race.

As of the time of reporting, the official timing for the final had not been released due to several technical difficulties affecting the competition in Accra.

The championships have continued to face criticism from athletes and observers following problems linked to a malfunctioning timing system, absence of live results, incomplete event data without wind readings, and inconsistent disqualifications across several events.

Despite those challenges, Amusan remained fully focused and capped her impressive run with another continental title.

The victory pushed Nigeria’s medal tally to four ahead of the men’s and women’s 100m finals scheduled for later on Wednesday evening.

After her triumph, Tobi Amusan took to X to celebrate the achievement and appreciate those who have supported her journey.

Nigeria had earlier opened its campaign at the 24th African Senior Athletics Championships on Tuesday with two medals in the women’s discus event.

Divine Oladipo claimed silver in her first international outing for Nigeria after switching allegiance from Great Britain, while Obiageri Amaechi secured bronze to complete a strong outing for Team Nigeria in the event.
