Nigeria’s Super Eagles have suffered a significant decline in the latest FIFA Men’s World Ranking, dropping four places to 30th in the world and slipping to sixth in Africa, Trybal News reports.

The latest ranking, released by FIFA on Wednesday, October 7, reflects the impact of Nigeria’s results during the recent international window.

The Super Eagles began the period ranked 26th globally and fourth in Africa but have now fallen behind Morocco, Senegal, Egypt, Algeria and Côte d’Ivoire.

Nigeria’s ranking points took a hit following a mixed run of results, which included a 2-1 victory over Madagascar and a heavy 3-0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau in the opening fixtures of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.

The Super Eagles produced a comeback victory against Madagascar in Uyo, with George Ilenikhena and Moses Usor scoring their first senior international goals.

However, the momentum was short-lived as Guinea-Bissau handed Nigeria a 3-0 defeat in Bissau. Franculino Djú, Mama Baldé and Álvaro Djaló were on target for the hosts.

Nigeria later ended the international window with a 3-3 draw against Russia in Nizhny Novgorod on October 6. Despite the result, the draw was not enough to prevent the Super Eagles from losing ground in the latest FIFA ranking.

Nigeria Drop Two More Places in Africa

The latest update represents a further decline in Nigeria’s continental position.

The Super Eagles had already fallen to fourth in Africa in FIFA’s previous ranking after Egypt moved above them. They have now dropped another two places to sixth.

Morocco remain Africa’s highest-ranked side and seventh in the world. Senegal are second in Africa and 18th globally, followed by Egypt, Algeria and Côte d’Ivoire.

Nigeria now sit ahead of DR Congo, Cameroon and Mali among Africa’s leading nations.

Spain Remain World Number One

At the top of the global ranking, Spain have retained first position, with Argentina second and France third.

England and Portugal complete the global top five, while Brazil are sixth.

Morocco’s seventh-place position makes them the only African nation inside the world’s top seven. Belgium, the Netherlands and Mexico complete the global top 10.

For Nigeria, the latest ranking underlines the importance of securing positive results in upcoming competitive fixtures as the Super Eagles look to regain the ground lost during a difficult international window.
