Nigerian internationals Taiwo Awoniyi and Frank Onyeka both featured as Coventry City began their return to the Premier League with a 3–0 defeat to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium, Trybal News reports.

The fixture marked Coventry’s first Premier League match since their return to the top flight, but Frank Lampard’s side found themselves up against a dominant Arsenal team. Kai Havertz opened the scoring in the 15th minute before Bukayo Saka doubled the lead eight minutes later. Martin Ødegaard added Arsenal’s third shortly after half-time as the defending champions secured a convincing opening-day victory.

Onyeka started the game and completed the full 90 minutes, offering Coventry energy and defensive work in midfield. The Nigeria international recorded 29 touches and completed 16 of his 22 passes, while making four defensive contributions, winning one tackle and two of six ground duels.

For Awoniyi, the match represented his first competitive appearance for Coventry following his move from Nottingham Forest. The Nigerian striker was introduced in the 70th minute, but had limited opportunities to influence the game as Coventry struggled to create attacking openings against Arsenal.

Awoniyi finished his debut with seven touches and six passes, completing four, while winning his only ground duel. With Arsenal firmly in control for much of the contest, the forward saw little service during his time on the pitch.

Despite the defeat, the opening fixture provided both Nigerians with their first taste of Premier League football in Coventry colours. Onyeka’s 90-minute outing gives Lampard a strong indication of the midfielder’s importance to his new-look side, while Awoniyi will hope for greater involvement as he settles into his new surroundings.

Coventry will now turn their attention to their next league fixture as they look to collect their first points of the season, while Arsenal begin their title defence with three points and a clean sheet.
