Super Eagles midfielder Raphael Onyedika has been nominated for the prestigious Ebony Shoe Award, an honour presented annually to the best African player or player of African descent in the Belgian Pro League.
The award, established in 1992, is widely regarded as one of the most respected individual recognitions in Belgian football. It is decided by a jury comprising league coaches, the national team manager, and sports journalists, further underlining its credibility.
Other nominees for this year’s prize include Zakaria El Ouahdi (Racing Genk), Parfait Guiagon (Charleroi), and Adem Zorgane (Union Saint-Gilloise).
Onyedika, 24, has been a key figure for Club Brugge this season, making 25 league appearances and contributing one goal. Since joining the Belgian giants in 2022, he has grown into one of the most consistent midfielders in the league, known for his ball-winning ability, tactical awareness, and composure in possession.
His performances have also extended to European competitions, where he has showcased his quality against top opposition, further boosting his reputation as an important player for both club and country.
Nigeria continues to maintain a strong legacy in the history of the award. Tolu Arokodare claimed last year’s prize, while Daniel Amokachi made history as the inaugural winner in 1992. Other Nigerian stars to have won the award include Victor Ikpeba, Godwin Okpara, Celestine Babayaro, and Paul Onuachu.
With Nigeria’s recent dominance in the award, Onyedika’s nomination further highlights the country’s continued influence in Belgian football.
The winner will be announced at Hotel Tangla on Monday, May 4.
