A Ghanaian Premier League footballer, Dominic Frimpong, has tragically died after armed robbers attacked his team while returning from an away fixture on Sunday night, according to the Ghana Football Association (GFA).

His club, Berekum Chelsea FC, confirmed the shocking incident in an official statement, revealing that “masked men wielding guns and assault rifles” opened fire on the team bus. The players and officials were forced to flee and take cover in nearby bushes as the attack unfolded.

According to police reports, the robbery occurred around 10:30 pm local time along the Ahyiresu–Kwame Dwumor Sreso road in the Nyinahin District of the Ashanti Region. During the нападение, Frimpong sustained gunshot wounds and was rushed to hospital, where he later died while receiving treatment.

Police also confirmed that another victim, George Owusu Afriyie, 52, was robbed of 4,500 Ghanaian cedis (approximately $408) during the incident.

The Ghana Football Association described the event as “tragic” and a “huge loss not only to Berekum Chelsea but to Ghana football as a whole.”

“Dominic was a promising young talent whose dedication and passion for the game embodied the spirit of our league,” the GFA said in a statement.

The 20-year-old forward had joined Berekum Chelsea FC on loan from Aduana Stars FC at the start of the year. He made 13 appearances for the club, scoring two goals, and was widely regarded as a rising talent in Ghanaian football.

Authorities are expected to continue investigations into the attack, as concerns grow over the safety of football teams traveling across the country.
