The Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Hon. Bukola Olopade, has challenged Nigeria’s sports federations to raise their standards as preparations gather momentum for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, Trybal News reports.

Speaking during a strategic meeting with federation executives and technical officials in Abuja, Olopade stressed the importance of athlete welfare, discipline, and performance as key pillars of Team Nigeria’s campaign.

The engagement provided an opportunity to align all federations with the Commission’s vision and performance objectives ahead of the Games.

As part of the preparations, the NSC confirmed that Team Nigeria’s final overseas training camp will be held in Aberdeen, Scotland, a location selected for its world-class sporting facilities, favourable climate conditions, and proximity to Glasgow. Local camping activities are scheduled to commence nationwide on June 9, 2026, focusing on conditioning, medical assessments, and technical preparations.

The welfare of our athletes remains a top priority because they are the reason we are going to Glasgow,” Olopade said. “We are determined to deliver Nigeria’s best-ever Commonwealth Games performance. We have carefully reviewed previous outings, identified areas for improvement, and commenced preparations early to ensure we are fully ready.”

The Commonwealth Games will take place from July 22 to August 2, 2026, bringing together athletes from more than 70 nations and territories across multiple sporting disciplines.

Olopade reiterated the Commission’s commitment to providing the necessary logistical, technical, and medical support required to maximise Team Nigeria’s chances of success.

Glasgow 2026 is about delivering results. It is an opportunity to demonstrate the progress Nigerian sports is making through proper planning, accountability, and an athlete-centred approach,” he added.

With early camping programmes, enhanced support structures, and a clear focus on performance, Team Nigeria is aiming to challenge strongly for medals across several events and build on its proud Commonwealth Games history.

The NSC believes that its emphasis on early preparation, professional management, and athlete support will provide the foundation for a successful campaign in Scotland.
