Nigeria’s Super Falcons kicked off their preparations for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations on a winning note, defeating Senegal’s Teranga Lionesses 2-1 in an international friendly at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne-Remo on Friday.

The nine-time African champions dominated large spells of the contest and were rewarded in the 32nd minute when captain Asisat Oshoala calmly converted from the penalty spot after Nigeria was awarded a spot-kick.

Making her first appearance for the Super Falcons since the last WAFCON final, Oshoala’s goal capped an encouraging return to the national team setup.

The hosts continued to dictate proceedings and doubled their advantage 11 minutes later through Toni Payne, who finished off a well-crafted team move. Payne, also returning to the squad after an extended absence, produced an assured display as Nigeria controlled possession and limited Senegal’s attacking threat.

Senegal pulled a goal back in the 86th minute to set up a nervy finish, but the Super Falcons remained composed to preserve their lead and secure victory.

The encounter marked the first-ever meeting between Nigeria and Senegal at senior women’s level and provided valuable preparation for both sides ahead of the WAFCON finals in Morocco.

The two teams will meet again in a second friendly at the same venue on Monday as Head Coach Justine Madugu continues to fine-tune his squad ahead of the continental showpiece, where the Super Falcons will be aiming to reclaim the African crown.
