Nigerian midfielder Kelechi Nwakali has completed a permanent transfer to Cypriot First Division side Omonia 29 Maiou, Trybal News reports.
The 28-year-old joins the club following the mutual termination of his contract with English League One outfit Barnsley, where he spent the past two seasons.
Nwakali becomes the second Nigerian player to join Omonia 29 Maiou during the current summer transfer window, following the signing of Super Eagles goalkeeper Francis Uzoho.
The former Arsenal midfielder joined Barnsley in August 2024 and made 30 appearances for the club, scoring once. His involvement was limited during the 2025/26 campaign before he departed Oakwell by mutual consent.
A product of Nigeria’s youth international system, Nwakali has also represented the Super Eagles at senior level, earning his first international cap in 2018.
He now continues his European career in Cyprus, with his experience across Spain, Portugal, the Netherlands, Norway and England adding considerable experience to Omonia 29 Maiou’s squad.
Omonia 29 Maiou will be hoping Nwakali’s experience and midfield qualities can add strength to their squad as they prepare for the new campaign.
