Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has defended his decision to hand opportunities to a number of young players, insisting fresh faces are essential to the team’s growth and future success.

Chelle spoke ahead of Nigeria’s high-profile international friendly against Portugal, scheduled for Wednesday at the Estádio Dr. Magalhães Pessoa in Leiria. The encounter forms part of the Super Eagles preparations as the Malian tactician continues to shape his squad for future competitions.

The former Mali coach believes the introduction of younger players can provide the extra spark needed to elevate the team.

We analyse our game and we try to put some players who can make the team improve because for me and for everybody it takes one detail to win a trophy,” Chelle told the Super Eagles media team.

So we have to improve because I think we have to put some young players who can bring a new mentality, something new and it’s not only about a question of mentality because the group has the mentality to win but we need to put something fresh.”

The Super Eagles have seen a number of emerging talents earn call-ups in recent months as Chelle seeks to build a squad capable of competing consistently at the highest level.

According to the 48-year-old, the enthusiasm and hunger of younger players can have a positive impact on the entire group.

Some players will come with lots of energy, they will bring something like they want to win, to improve and the national team can be this for them.”

Nigeria head into the friendly on the back of encouraging performances during the recent international window and will be looking to test themselves against one of Europe’s strongest sides. For Chelle, however, the focus extends beyond the result in Leiria, with the coach determined to create a balanced blend of experience and youth capable of delivering long-term success for Nigerian football.
