Egypt secured a historic place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup knockout stage for the first time after battling to a dramatic 1-1 draw against Iran at Seattle Stadium. The result guaranteed the Pharaohs second place in Group G, while Iran must now wait for results elsewhere to discover if they will progress as one of the best third-placed teams.

The match also marked a personal milestone for Mohamed Salah, who became the first Egyptian player to make five World Cup starts. The Liverpool forward hoped to build on his first tournament goal against New Zealand, and Egypt made the perfect start.

The breakthrough arrived in the fifth minute after Alireza Beiranvand failed to deal with Salah’s effort. The loose ball dropped kindly for Mahmoud Saber, who calmly drilled a first-time finish through the goalkeeper’s legs and into the bottom left corner to hand Egypt an early 1-0 lead.

Iran had an immediate opportunity to respond four minutes later when referee Szymon Marciniak awarded a penalty after Mohamed Abdelmonem clipped Mehdi Taremi inside the area. However, Mostafa Shobier guessed correctly and produced an excellent save to deny Taremi’s low effort, preserving Egypt’s advantage.

The game continued at a frantic pace, and Iran found their equaliser in the 14th minute. Mohammad Mohammadi forced another brilliant save from Shobier, but the rebound fell perfectly for Ramin Rezaeian, who reacted quickest to smash the ball into the roof of the net from a tight angle.

Both sides continued to search for another goal before the break. Deep into first-half stoppage time, Ali Nemati delivered an inviting cross that found Shoja Khalilzadeh, whose powerful header drifted narrowly wide with Shobier stranded off his line.

The teams went into half time level after an entertaining opening 45 minutes. Egypt struck first through Saber, while Shobier’s penalty save briefly kept Iran behind before Rezaeian’s finish restored parity.

Egypt nearly regained the lead shortly after the restart. Salah weaved past two defenders before slipping a clever pass to Mahmoud Hassan Trezeguet inside the penalty area, but Beiranvand reacted quickly to smother the first-time effort.

Iran continued to press as the second half progressed. Although they looked set to become only the third Asian nation to complete an unbeaten World Cup group stage after Japan and South Korea, qualification remained uncertain despite avoiding defeat.

The closing stages produced remarkable drama. In the 89th minute, Taremi climbed highest to meet a corner, only to see his header strike the post. The referee then awarded Egypt a free kick after judging that Shobier had been fouled, despite minimal contact.

Iran believed they had won the match three minutes into stoppage time when Shoja Khalilzadeh bundled the ball home after a goalmouth scramble. Wild celebrations quickly turned to heartbreak as VAR ruled the goal out for offside, keeping the score level at 1-1.

There was still time for one final scare. In the seventh minute of added time, the ball ricocheted off Saeid Ezatolahi before crashing against the crossbar from close range, leaving Egypt hanging on desperately until the final whistle.

The full-time whistle sparked emotional scenes across Seattle. More than 66,000 supporters held their breath during the VAR review before Egyptian fans erupted in celebration once the offside decision was confirmed.

Egypt survived a relentless late assault to secure a point that sends them into the Round of 32 for the first time in their World Cup history. Iran, meanwhile, were left devastated after seeing victory slip away at the last moment and must now wait anxiously for results from other groups to determine whether their World Cup journey will continue.

After the final whistle, Salah crossed the pitch to embrace an emotional Mehdi Taremi in a touching moment of sportsmanship that brought an unforgettable night in Seattle to a close.
