Nigeria appears to be taking a more organised route into the 2026 Commonwealth Games, with the National Sports Commission (NSC) confirming that major logistical arrangements for the team have already been concluded well ahead of schedule.
The multi-sport event will be held in Glasgow, Scotland, from July 23 to August 2, and officials say the groundwork laid so far is intended to avoid the last-minute rush that has often characterised Nigeria’s preparations for international competitions.
Yusuf Alli, chairman of the NSC Elite Athletes Development and Podium Board and designated chef de mission for the Games, said key operational areas have been addressed, including accommodation, training facilities and competition kits.
He also noted that athlete-focused provisions such as training grants and allowances have been sorted early to ensure athletes can concentrate fully on their preparations.
Alli emphasised that the commission is deliberately moving away from reactive planning, stressing that early coordination is central to achieving improved results in Glasgow.
Nigeria’s build-up to previous global events has frequently been hampered by logistical setbacks, sometimes impacting performance levels. At the Paris 2024 Olympics, for instance, challenges around equipment and preparation drew attention to the need for better planning structures.
With several months still remaining before the Games, officials believe the current level of readiness provides a stronger platform for Team Nigeria to compete effectively and avoid the disruptions of the past.
