Super Eagles goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo has completed a season-long loan move from Wrexham to Championship side Charlton Athletic, Trybal News reports.

The 24-year-old makes the switch to The Valley after playing a key role in Wrexham’s remarkable rise through the English football pyramid, helping the Welsh club secure back-to-back promotions.

Okonkwo initially joined Wrexham on loan from Arsenal and impressed during their promotion campaign before completing a permanent move in June 2024. He remained an important figure the following season as Wrexham finished second in League One to secure another promotion.

Speaking after completing his move, Okonkwo said he was eager to get started and continue developing under Charlton manager Nathan Jones.

I’m happy to be here and I’m ready to go. Coming here, it’s another season where I really want to do well and improve again.”

The goalkeeper added that his discussions with Jones had made the club’s expectations clear.

Speaking to the manager, that’s what he wants me to do here – not only to do well, but to improve as a goalkeeper.”

Jones was also keen to bring Okonkwo to Charlton, having been impressed by the goalkeeper during their meetings with Wrexham last season.

He made two world-class saves against us last season, one in each game we played against Wrexham,” Jones said.

Born in Camden to Nigerian parents, Okonkwo came through Arsenal’s academy and represented England at youth level before switching his international allegiance to Nigeria.

FIFA approved the change of association in April 2026, paving the way for him to represent the Super Eagles at senior level. He subsequently received his first Nigeria call-up for the 2026 Unity Cup under head coach Eric Chelle.

Okonkwo made his senior international debut on May 26, starting Nigeria’s 2-0 victory over Zimbabwe at The Valley and keeping a clean sheet. He has since earned two senior caps.

His move to Charlton therefore represents an important next step, giving the young goalkeeper the chance to compete for regular Championship football while strengthening his position within Nigeria’s senior setup.

I can’t wait to get to know them even more,” Okonkwo said of his new teammates after receiving a warm welcome at Charlton.

For a goalkeeper whose career has already taken him from Arsenal’s academy to Austria, Wrexham and now the Championship, the coming season offers another opportunity to take his game to the next level.
