More than 3,000 runners have registered for the 2026 Abeokuta 10KM Race, with the fifth edition set for Saturday, 3 October, in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

The strong turnout has increased excitement around the road race, which Nilayo Sports Management Limited is organising.

The race will start at Macjob Grammar School, Onikolobo, at 7am. From there, runners will pass through parts of Abeokuta before finishing at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena in Kuto.

The route will give runners a chance to experience different parts of the city. It will also allow spectators to enjoy the atmosphere around one of Nigeria’s growing road running events.

Abeokuta Prepares for a Major Sporting Event

One of the key features of this year’s Abeokuta 10KM Race is its focus on Nigerian athletes.

The organisers have made the event a 100 per cent indigenous competition. As a result, only Nigerian runners can compete in the race.

However, the event will offer more than a contest for prize money. Organisers also expect the race to create economic opportunities for businesses and traders along the route.

Food vendors, transport operators, artisans and hospitality providers are among those expected to benefit. Increased movement around the city could also bring more customers to small businesses.

For residents and visitors, the race promises to combine sport with culture and tourism. Abeokuta will therefore have an opportunity to showcase its character while hosting the fifth edition of the event.

Top sports administrators, active and retired sportsmen and women, athletics enthusiasts and people from different walks of life are expected to attend.

With more than 3,000 runners already registered, attention now turns to 3 October as Abeokuta prepares for another major day of road running.
