Mexico completed a flawless 2026 FIFA World Cup group stage campaign with a commanding victory over the Czechia, scoring three second half goals to secure maximum points and eliminate their European opponents from the tournament.
The co-hosts had already confirmed top spot in Group A before kick-off after victories over South Africa and South Korea. That allowed head coach Javier Aguirre to rotate his squad, making five changes to the starting lineup, and the decision paid off as Mexico finished the group phase in impressive fashion at Mexico City Stadium.
Czechia started brightly and nearly grabbed an early lead in the eighth minute. Pavel Sulc drove down the right wing before sending a dangerous low cross into the area. The ball took a deflection and fell kindly for Visinsky, whose first time effort drifted agonisingly wide of the far post.
The Czech side continued to threaten two minutes later when Visinsky tried his luck from 25 yards. However, his ambitious effort never troubled the goalkeeper as it sailed wide of the right upright.
Mexico gradually gained control and began to create openings of their own. Their best chance of the first half arrived in the 39th minute when Sanchez collected possession on the right side of the penalty area and fired toward the near post. Goalkeeper Matej Kovar reacted well and punched the ball clear to keep the scores level.
The first half ended goalless, although both sides had opportunities. Czechia arguably came closest through Visinsky’s early effort, while Mexico saw Reyes send a bicycle kick narrowly off target before Kovar’s excellent save denied Sanchez.
Mexico finally found the breakthrough 10 minutes into the second half. Romo showed excellent strength to hold up possession near the halfway line before releasing Mateo Chavez on the right. The young full-back burst forward, beat Sadilek with determination and calmly slotted a left footed finish into the bottom corner to make it 1-0.
The goal carried extra significance for Chavez, who became Mexico’s youngest World Cup goalscorer since Javier Hernandez scored against Argentina in 2010 at the age of 22 years and 26 days. Chavez found the net at 22 years and 41 days old, marking a memorable moment in his international career.
Mexico doubled their advantage six minutes later as Czechia’s resistance crumbled. Mora’s clever pass released Sanchez down the right flank and although Kovar rushed out to stop the initial danger, the clearance fell kindly after rebounding off Sanchez. Quinones reacted quickest and poked the loose ball home from close range to give Mexico a comfortable 2-0 lead.
With the result already secure, the home crowd enjoyed a historic moment in the 78th minute. Veteran goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa replaced Rangel to make his sixth FIFA World Cup appearance. The legendary shot stopper received a huge ovation from the supporters as he became the seventh player aged 40 or older to feature at the 2026 World Cup.
At 40 years and 346 days old, Ochoa also became the oldest player ever to appear for Mexico at a World Cup, surpassing the previous record set by Rafa Marquez, who played against Brazil in 2018 at 39 years and 139 days old.
Mexico added a third goal late on to complete an emphatic victory and cap off a perfect group stage campaign. The win secured nine points from three matches and underlined their status as one of the tournament’s strongest teams heading into the knockout rounds.
The result also marked Mexico’s biggest World Cup victory since their 4-0 triumph over El Salvador in 1970. More importantly, it ended Czechia’s hopes of progression and confirmed Mexico’s place in the knockout stage with maximum points and growing momentum.
After three wins from three matches, Aguirre’s side now turn their focus to the knockout rounds, where they will hope their impressive form can carry them even deeper into the tournament.
