Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos insisted his side delivered a solid performance despite suffering a 2-0 defeat to hosts Mexico in their opening Group A match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Thursday.

South Africa endured a difficult evening at the iconic Azteca Stadium as Mexico capitalised on key mistakes to secure all three points in front of a passionate home crowd. However, Broos remained encouraged by aspects of his team’s display and believes the result did not fully reflect their performance.

“I think my team played a good game,” Hugo Broos said in his post match television interview.

“In some moments Mexico were desperate in in the game, they didn’t know how to find space. The only thing we must be better at in the next game is when we have the ball. We were not so good with that today, we have to work on it.”

South Africa fell behind in the ninth minute after midfielder Sphephelo Sithole lost possession in a dangerous area. Mexico quickly punished the mistake as Julian Quiñones fired past captain and goalkeeper Ronwen Williams to hand the hosts an early advantage.

Mexico continued to press but Bafana managed to settle into the contest and enjoyed periods of possession. Nevertheless, they struggled to create clear scoring opportunities and rarely tested the Mexican defence.

The hosts doubled their lead after the break when veteran striker Raul Jimenez ghosted in at the back post and headed home, leaving South Africa with a mountain to climb.

Bafana’s task became even harder as discipline issues further damaged their hopes of a comeback. Sithole received a straight red card after bringing down Brian Gutierrez and denying a clear goalscoring opportunity. Later in the match, substitute Themba Zwane also saw red after a VAR review determined that he had struck Roberto Alvarado with his arm.

“I think the first red card (for Sithole), I won’t say anything about. With the second red card I think the Mexican player fouled my player. But the referee decided something else,” said Hugo Broos.

“It is a bit of a pity we had to finish the game with nine players.”

Despite the coach’s positive assessment, many observers viewed South Africa’s display differently. Bafana struggled to threaten Mexico’s goal throughout the match and often appeared short of ideas in attack, even before the dismissals reduced them to nine men.

Broos, however, felt his players handled long periods of the game well against a host nation backed by a capacity crowd.

“When you play a game against the hosts you will be under pressure,” said Broos.

“But the only moment we were under pressure was in the first 20 minutes. After that we had the ball and played well. But we made two mistakes on our side. In those moments you don’t have to lose the ball. We lost the ball, and there was space for Mexico and they could score twice,” he added.

South Africa captain Ronwen Williams echoed his coach’s belief that costly errors ultimately decided the match. The goalkeeper admitted that mistakes at World Cup level are often punished immediately but praised his teammates for continuing to fight until the final whistle.

“If you make mistakes, they will punish you. They will hurt you at this level. I think the most important thing is that now we know what we’re up against, because we’re not used to this. We haven’t been part of the World Cup for a very long time. We went down, but we kept fighting. We didn’t give them anything towards the end. We had a few decent chances as well. We’ll keep fighting, we’ll keep going as a team, and we’ll be better.”

The defeat leaves Bafana Bafana with work to do in Group A, but their World Cup campaign remains alive. South Africa will face Czechia in Atlanta on June 18 before concluding their group stage fixtures against South Korea in Guadalupe on June 24. Positive results in those matches could still secure a place in the knockout rounds.
