Tunisia coach Sabri Lamouchi admitted his side paid a heavy price for a series of costly mistakes after Sunday’s 5-1 defeat to Sweden in their opening Group F match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The North Africans endured a difficult evening as Sweden’s attacking quality proved too much to handle. Yasin Ayari scored twice, while Alexander Isak and Viktor Gyokeres also found the net in a dominant Swedish display.

Speaking after the match, Lamouchi did not hide his disappointment with the result and warned that similar errors could seriously damage Tunisia’s hopes of reaching the knockout stages.

“It’s a difficult loss. It’s painful. Starting the competition with this bad of a loss is indeed difficult,” Lamouchi told reporters after the game.

The Tunisia coach highlighted Sweden’s dangerous forward line as a key factor behind the defeat. However, he stressed that his players failed to deal with situations they had prepared for before the match.

“With world-class players that we have in the two Swedish forwards, it’s something that you don’t recover from,” he said.

Lamouchi repeatedly returned to the issue of individual mistakes, describing them as the main reason his team suffered such a heavy defeat.

“We made way too many mistakes,” he added.

Despite the disappointing scoreline, the coach felt Tunisia showed signs of improvement after the interval and briefly looked capable of getting back into the contest. However, further defensive lapses ended any hopes of a comeback and allowed Sweden to extend their advantage.

Tunisia now face a difficult task in Group F, with crucial fixtures against Japan and the Netherlands still to come. Nevertheless, Lamouchi insisted his players must respond positively and show greater determination in their remaining matches.

“We have our pride. We need to react. We need to give a better image,” he said.

The defeat leaves Tunisia under immediate pressure heading into their next two group matches, while Sweden strengthened their early bid for a place in the knockout rounds with one of the most convincing victories of the opening weekend of the 2026 World Cup.
