Ademola Lookman scored the decisive goal as Atlético Madrid advanced to the UEFA Champions League semi-finals with a 3–2 aggregate victory over FC Barcelona.
Despite falling to a 2–1 defeat in the second leg at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano, Lookman’s crucial first-half strike ensured Atlético progressed to the final four for the first time since the 2016–17 season.
Barcelona made a blistering start to the encounter, taking the lead just four minutes in through Lamine Yamal. The visitors maintained their momentum, and in the 24th minute, Ferran Torres curled a fine effort into the top corner to level the tie on aggregate.

With the pressure mounting, Atlético responded at a critical moment. In the 31st minute, Marcos Llorente sparked a rapid counterattack and delivered a precise ball into the box. Lookman timed his run perfectly and finished calmly past the goalkeeper to restore Atlético’s aggregate advantage at 3–2.
Barcelona believed they had equalized again early in the second half when Torres found the net in the 55th minute, but the goal was ruled out following a VAR review for offside.
Lookman was later substituted in the 66th minute, making way for Nicolás González, while Giuliano Simeone was replaced by Álex Baena. Barcelona responded by introducing Marcus Rashford and Robert Lewandowski in search of a comeback.
However, their task became even more difficult in the 80th minute when Eric García was shown a straight red card for bringing down Alexander Sørloth and denying a clear goalscoring opportunity.
With the numerical advantage, Atlético managed the closing stages with composure, holding off late pressure from Barcelona to secure qualification and eliminate Hansi Flick’s side.
Lookman’s strike sees him become the fourth Super Eagles player to score in a Champions League quarter-final, further highlighting his impact on the European stage. It also took his tally in the competition to eight goals, making him the third-highest Nigerian scorer in UEFA Champions League history, behind Obafemi Martins and Victor Osimhen.
