UEFA and Fanatics have unveiled a new “Debut” sleeve badge for the 2026/27 UEFA Champions League season, creating a special memento for players making their first-ever appearance in Europe’s premier club competition, Trybal News reports.

The new emblem will be worn on the right sleeve and integrated into the iconic UEFA Champions League Starball patch. A bright blue “DEBUT” marking will identify players making their first appearance in the competition.

The initiative will also create a unique collectible from one of football’s biggest milestones. After each match, the debut badge worn by a player will be removed and transferred to Topps, Fanatics’ trading-card company, where it will be authenticated and embedded into an exclusive trading card that will also be signed by the player.

Importantly, the Starball sleeve patch will retain the “DEBUT” inscription after the blue portion is removed, meaning match-worn shirts will continue to carry a permanent reminder of the player’s first Champions League appearance.

Players who come off the bench to make their debut will also qualify for the badge, while those who are named in the squad but remain unused substitutes will have to wait until their actual first appearance.

The new initiative could provide a particularly memorable moment for several Nigerian players expected to make their Champions League debuts this season, including Moses Usor of LASK and Prosper Obah of Shakhtar Donetsk.

Nigerian forward Christian Nwachukwu of Sabah FK is also part of the Nigerian contingent in this season’s competition, although he has already made appearances during the Champions League qualifying campaign and would therefore not qualify as a debutant for the new badge.

The 2026/27 Champions League league phase gets underway on September 8, with 36 clubs competing for European football’s most coveted club prize.

The debut-patch concept, which originated in Major League Baseball, has already been adopted across several major sports, including the NFL, NBA, Bundesliga, Formula 1, MLS, UFC and WWE. The initiative is also expected to be introduced in the UEFA Women’s Champions League from the 2027/28 season.

UEFA president Aleksander Čeferin welcomed the continued partnership with Fanatics, saying the collaboration would help make major moments feel special for fans and collectors around the world.

The announcement comes as UEFA and Fanatics prepare to extend their existing partnership, with the two organisations expected to announce a further six-year agreement taking their collaboration through 2033.
