Portugal produced a commanding display to thrash Uzbekistan 5-0 on Tuesday at Houston Stadium and secure their first victory of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Cristiano Ronaldo stole the show with two goals as Roberto Martinez’s side moved closer to qualification from Group K.

The result ended Portugal’s wait for a win after their opening 1-1 draw against DR Congo, while Uzbekistan suffered a fourth consecutive defeat in all competitions following their opening 3-1 loss to Colombia.

This was the first ever meeting between the two nations, and Portugal quickly showed their superiority from the opening whistle.

Joao Neves caused problems almost immediately in the third minute. The midfielder drove into the box before picking out Bruno Fernandes, whose effort took a deflection and flew over the crossbar.

Two minutes later, Nuno Mendes surged down the left flank and delivered a dangerous cross toward Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portugal captain launched himself at the ball but missed by inches.

Portugal’s early pressure paid off in the sixth minute. Joao Cancelo burst forward from right back and delivered a precise pass into Ronaldo’s path. The veteran striker timed his run perfectly before guiding a composed finish beyond Abduvokhid Nematov to make it 1-0.

The goal was another historic milestone for Ronaldo. He became the first player ever to score at six different FIFA World Cup tournaments. It was also his ninth World Cup goal, making him the second oldest scorer in the competition’s history.

Portugal continued to dominate and nearly doubled their advantage when Pedro Neto was brought down on the edge of the area in the 15th minute. The resulting free kick produced Portugal’s second goal two minutes later.

While everyone inside the stadium expected Ronaldo to take the set piece, Nuno Mendes stepped forward instead and curled a superb effort into the bottom corner. The goalkeeper should have done better, but Portugal deserved their 2-0 lead.

The strike carried historical significance. Nuno Mendes became only the second Portugal player to score directly from a free kick at a World Cup, following Ronaldo’s famous effort against Spain in 2018.

Uzbekistan briefly threatened in the 20th minute after Vitinha lost possession deep inside his own half. The ball quickly found Sherzod Nasrullaev, whose powerful effort forced Diogo Costa into a solid save.

The underdogs thought they had pulled a goal back in the 29th minute. Aziz G’aniev rifled a stunning long range effort into the top corner after a challenge on Joao Cancelo. However, a VAR review ruled the goal out after officials determined G’aniev had committed a foul during the build up.

Portugal remained in complete control and added a third goal six minutes before half time. They won possession deep inside their own half before slicing through the Uzbekistan press with impressive speed. Bruno Fernandes threaded a brilliant pass into Ronaldo’s path, and the captain finished clinically into the far corner.

The goal moved Ronaldo onto 10 World Cup goals, surpassing Eusebio’s tally of nine and making him Portugal’s all time leading scorer in FIFA World Cup history.

Ronaldo nearly completed his hat trick in first half stoppage time. Joao Cancelo delivered another dangerous cross, and the striker cleverly dinked the ball toward goal. However, Abdukodir Khusanov produced a superb goal line clearance to deny him.

The match also featured a remarkable World Cup statistic. There were 22 years and 183 days between Uzbekistan’s Bekhruz Karimov, aged 18 years and 320 days, and Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo, aged 41 years and 138 days. It marked the largest age gap between two starting players in World Cup history.

Portugal entered the break firmly in control and became the first team at the 2026 World Cup to create five clear cut chances in a single first half.

The second half followed a similar pattern. Ronaldo was heavily involved and nearly grabbed another goal in the 59th minute. Bruno Fernandes floated a delightful free kick into the area, but Nematov denied the veteran forward before colliding with him.

Portugal’s fourth goal arrived on the hour mark. A low corner caused chaos inside the Uzbekistan penalty area. Joao Felix flicked the ball on before it bounced off several players. Goalkeeper Nematov then accidentally turned the ball into his own net under pressure.

Ronaldo continued his pursuit of a hat trick throughout the final stages. In the 75th minute, Nematov’s clearance struck the Portugal captain and rolled toward goal, but the goalkeeper recovered brilliantly to make the save.

Bruno Fernandes also tested Nematov from distance in the 85th minute as Portugal looked for more goals.

Their fifth finally arrived two minutes later. Nelson Semedo made an excellent overlapping run before pulling the ball back into the penalty area. The pass intended for Ronaldo was intercepted, but the loose ball fell kindly to Rafael Leao, who smashed a powerful finish into the net.

The goal was Leao’s first at the 2026 FIFA World Cup and his first World Cup goal since scoring against Switzerland in December 2022.

Portugal almost added a sixth in stoppage time. First, Trincao narrowly missed the target after meeting a low cross from Nuno Mendes. Moments later, Ronaldo stretched desperately to reach another inviting delivery but could not make contact.

When the final whistle arrived, Portugal had completed a comprehensive 5-0 victory. Ronaldo’s double ended the growing discussion surrounding his recent drought in major tournaments and reminded the football world why he remains one of the game’s biggest stars.

The Portugal captain entered the match under pressure after failing to score in his previous 10 appearances at major international tournaments. Yet he responded in emphatic fashion, producing a clinical performance that helped his side secure three vital points.

Portugal now turn their attention to a crucial Group K showdown against Colombia on June 27, where they will look to seal top spot in the group. After this dominant display, confidence within Roberto Martinez’s squad will be sky high.
